...record multiple Karma GE's into an external sequencer
Here is a scenario in which a customer copies a Combi into the first 8 tracks the Karma sequencer, and hopes to record the (up to) 4 GEs that are affecting that Combination... into an EXTERNAL sequencer.
Some customers have gotten doubled MIDI tracks, others indicate that the GE's were not on time - and some simply don't get anything recorded at all. But all these issues can be put to rest if you follow these three very simple rules which help to create the perfect setup to allow this method of recording:
Rule 1: You MUST
pay attention to what KARMA GEs are affecting what tracks prior to changing
track status. Setting all tracks to BTH (which is what most customers assume
correct) is not the answer at all. There are four KARMA GEs possible, but one
GE can affect multiple tracks on the same channel. If you set more than one
of those tracks to BTH you're duplicating info. In other words, If GE A is affecting
Tracks 2,3 and 4, all on channel 2, you only need to set track 2 to BTH. Otherwise,
you're duplicating information two or threefold, and this will start to make
the Combi sound unmusical. Furthermore, tracks with a status of OFF in the Combi
remain OFF.
Rule 2: Karma local
ON/ Seq's Echo OFF when you intend to record ONLY. You're essentially reversing
the normal setup of a External Sequencer/MIDI device relationship. But the reason
for doing this is so the notes that KARMA is playing will be recorded, rather
than they keys that you're playing (Like recording an arp). Otherwise (for playback),
the status for both is set as it would be with any similar application (Karma's
Local OFF and the Sequencer's ECHO set to ON {Auto, thru? Depends on the Sequencer)
Rule 3: When recording
a KARMA GE, it is necessary to record yourself turning the KARMA function OFF,
then ON with the button ON THE BEAT. This ensures that the status is correct
to capture the note info and that the data will be timed correctly. The OFF
message can pretty much happen anywhere. But, to have the GE start correctly
and in time with the Sequence, the ON message should be placed on
the VERY FIRST BEAT of a measure.
Follow these rules, and you will have, um... "Good Karma" =)
